Friendship Day

What is International Friendship Day? August, on the first Sunday is the U.S. Congress Declared day of dedication to the celebration of friendship. It was my friend Arup who first told me about the 75 days of celebration Friendship Day Tradition and how it got its inception when, in 1935, American govt. had killed a person in the 1st sat of Aug. The next day his friend died commiting Suicide. In his memory American govt. has declared 1st Sunday of every August as Friendship Day.

So on today, August 2, Happy Friendship Day. Is this any different than "Friends Day" by other countries? On July 17th, 2009 Facebook users and several groups launched a marketing campaign declaring “Friends Day” as July, 20th, other groups celebrate August . The "Twitter-verse" was busy today with well wishes for International Friendship Day. Whether a manufactured marketing event in July or August or any other time... the time to celebrate friendship is when we remember friends.. is it so bad to have multiple days to focus on gratitude of people, our dearest, greatest resource?

How Do YOU Celebrate International Friendship Day? Some organize parties, plan camping trips, others make the day a time to call friends, Skype, write letters of appreciation etc.. One of my friends suggested making a mix music list that represented the music of your friendships... FUN-- and no longer needed on a cd with iTunes play lists, etc!!

With the advent of social networking it is easier and more efficient but is MORE reach better? It IS easier to get in touch and keep in touch, is it as meaningful?

Information on global friendships is easier to access, ideas and support of friendship too.. So nice to see what was sometimes regarded as a merely commercial effort, to take the form of friendship banding together more globally and environmentally as a friendly force for positive change and connectivity.

Friendship in a Web 2.0 World from Green Marketing 2.0 offered a most profound commentary on todays social networking and friendship, "Social networks have redefined friendship and the way we connect to each other, allowing us to maintain more relationships over time with a lot less effort than before."
